New York City may be the birthpace of gay rights, but it can be surprisingly tough to tap into the lesbian community in this LGBT-friendly metropolis. Boy bars abound, but you'll find only two lesbian bars and a few mixed venues on the whole island of Manhattan, believe it or not. But don't despair: the girls are out there, and here's how to find them.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • the Internet
  • a friend (optional)
  • desire to meet lesbians
  1. Step 1

A quick search on Google for "lesbian bars in New York" will bring up venues including Henrietta Hudson, Rubyfruit and the Cubbyhole. These are all good places to start, although don't bother with Rubyfruit unless you're over 40, or looking for a gal in that age range. The Cubbyhole describes itself as mixed, and you'll find your fair share of boys here, but lately the weekends are dominated by the ladies.

  2. Step 2

If you don't find your dream girl in the bars, you'll want to check out the parties. New York's lesbian scene has become increasingly tied to weekly and monthly parties at various venues. On Tuesdays, head for Snapshot at Bar 13 in Union Square; Union Square is hot on Wednesdays as well, with Eden in the downstairs lounge at The Coffee Shop; on Thursdays, the girls party where it all began at The Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street; head uptown for GirlNation on Saturdays and then east for Starlette Sundays. And if you want to meet the entire NYC lesbian scene at once, go to the Shescape Events website and make sure to show up at their next big party, which are some of the best attended in the city.

  3. Step 3

Ok, so you're not into the party scene. Check out the LGBT Community Center on West 13th street for tons of lesbian events every week. Visit www.pinkcupid.com to find a date and then head to Doma Cafe in the West Village for coffee.

  4. Step 4

Pick up the lesbian literature. Go Magazine is a must, and you can find it free of charge in most bars and in many retail stores and restaurants throughout the city. Gay City News will keep you informed and also has event and nightlife listings - look for the yellow bin on street corners throughout Manhattan.
