Altered tins are a trendy item among avid scrappers today. Paint cans may be altered to create many different kinds of items. A small paint can is the perfect size for a pencil holder to sit on top of a desk.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Quart size paint can
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Scrapbook embellishments (brads, stamps, ribbon)
  • Liquid adhesive
  • Pencils/pens

Step1
Cut the paper to fit the paint can. For a quart size can the paper will be about 4 ¾” wide. If you are cutting from a 12x12 piece of paper you will need two pieces; one piece will not wrap all the way around the can.
Step2
Red cardstock on the sides to fill in what the patterned paper doesn't cover. Cut other smaller strips of paper to act as a border or a fill in for the sides of the can, like on the paint can that is pictured.
Step3
Glue the paper over the paint can to cover it completely.
Step4
Use stamped images, metal embellishments or ribbon to finish decorating your paint can.
Step5
Fill the can with writing instruments and give it as a gift to a teacher, mother or just someone special.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spread your liquid adhesive evenly and sparingly so you don’t get creases in the paper.
  • Be creative and give the can your own personal touch by adding unique embellishments.
  • Decorate the can in colors that will match the office or classroom where it will be displayed.
