To cut off and then reattach the tattered hemline on a pair of jeans might seem bizarre. But retaining the original hemline after an alteration keeps the vintage look intact. When you find yourself stepping on the heels of a new pair of jeans, read this guide to learn how to find a tailor that does an original hem.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A sexy new pair of jeans--that are too long
  • Your measurements
  1. Step 1

Before you call local alterations businesses, ask your friends who also have an affinity for expensive new "vintage" denim if they have recommendations.

  2. Step 2

If your friends suggest someone, ask to see a pair of jeans that they have had hemmed with the original bottoms.

  3. Step 3

When judging an original hem, the most important factor to consider is whether or not your can tell that the jeans were altered. Does the new hemline on your original hemline perfectly match the color of your jeans or does it look like a second hemline?

  4. Step 4

If your friends do not have any recommendations, call alterations businesses in your area and ask if they know someone who specializes in denim alteration.

  5. Step 5

When you find a place that knows exactly what you are looking for, ask to see some of their work. Judge their quality by asking yourself the same question in Step 3. Those of you who spend $200 to $300 or more on denim will be more than happy to invest some extra time into finding the right person to do your hemming.

  6. Step 6

Once you feel confident that your denim is in good hands, go in to be measured. If you would like to wear this particular pair with heels, remember to bring some heels with you for more accurate height measurements.

Tips & Warnings
  • The average cost of a quality original hem is about $12 per pair of jeans
  • Many denim boutiques will hem your jeans for free when you buy them, even with the original hemline. Always ask!
