How to Whitewash a Tree

Whitewashing tree trunks is an old yet effective way to sun-scald of tree bark from bright winter sunshine.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • water
  • bucket
  • table salt
  • 10 pds hydrated lime or white latex paint.
  1. Step 1

    The following recipe will be enough to whitewash 1-2 trees.

  2. Step 2

    Dissolve 3 pounds of table salt in 12 quarts of water.

  3. Step 3

    Then slowly add and stir in 10 pounds of hydrated lime.

    An alternate solution can be made using 50% white latex paint and 50% water.

  4. Step 4

    When painting rough bark make the first coat a little thinner than the required recipe. For the second coat the listed recipe will be a perfect consistency.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stir the solution frequently to keep consistency
  • Make sure to let the first coat dry before applying the second coat.
  • Lime is a strong chemical and skin can be very sensitive to it so rubber gloves are highly recommended.
