How to Keep Your Number when Switching Phone Carriers

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) now requires all cell phone carriers to allow users to keep their existing phone numbers when switching to another service provider. However, there are a few things to consider to ensure it goes smoothly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Verify with the phone carrier you’ll be switching to that your number can indeed be switched over. Do not contact your existing service provider, as they will generally not be too eager to aid a departing customer.
Step2
In order for a number to be successfully switched over, it has to be in the same local area. For instance, if you move from Maine to Florida, you cannot keep your number. Your area code location needs to stay the same for this to work.
Step3
Do not discontinue your service with your old provider until the change has occurred! Doing so will place your number back into public circulation.
Step4
Inform your new carrier immediately of any problems in switching over. Keep in mind that extras such as voice mail will need to be reconfigured with your new phone carrier.
