How to Pack a ReloCube

Whether you’re moving cross-country or simply across town, figuring out how to get your things from one place to another cheaply is no small task. A company called ABF U-Pack offers an option if you don’t have too much to move: a ReloCube. These moving pods are the size of a large shed and can be filled with the equivalent of a studio apartment’s furnishings.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Plan your packing schedule. Set aside at least a day to fully pack a ReloCube. Many ReloCubes will not be wired for electricity, and therefore have no lights to illuminate your work, so plan on packing during daylight.
Step2
Organize your belongings by weight. Put all the heavy things on the bottom, and then work your way up to the top with lighter boxes. You’ll usually have almost as much room vertically as you do horizontally. Put all of the heavy boxes in one area so you can see everything you have and plan a strategy. The ideal things to pack first are boxes of books, unassembled furniture in flat boxes and things like tabletops or large pieces of board.
Step3
Once the heavier items are in the cube, walk around your things and imagine how the other boxes can fit together. Some boxes may have to be turned on their side to fit in spaces created by other boxes. The most important thing to remember is to pack securely, without any space between the boxes or furniture items. This will guard against breakage due to items shifting during transit.
Step4
Use rope. Most pods will have strips of metal with punched-out holes in the corners and on the walls on which you’ll be able to fasten some rope or twine to hold your belongings in place. Start tying before your belongings tower so high that you can’t climb safely to the back of the cube to attach the rope. Just tie some long pieces to the back of the pod and let the ends trail out the door. You can always ignore them later. Rope will stop your belongings from shifting too much during transit, but it will also help to wedge blankets and towels into the inevitable small spaces that are created during packing.
Step5
Get a good lock or two. Regular Master locks, either combination locks or locks with keys, will work just fine. In most cases your renter’s insurance will cover your belongings while in transit, but a good lock may persuade thieves to look elsewhere.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lampshades, large vases or small appliances may be awkward to pack in boxes, but it's worth it. The most breakages occur with things that aren't securely nestled together.
