How to Stay in Touch When Far Away

Though considered old fashioned, postcards are still enjoyed as a way to keep in touch. Though considered old fashioned, postcards are still enjoyed as a way to keep in touch.

Nowadays you don’t hear the word “voyage” much. That’s because jet travel, bullet trains and ribbons of highway have replaced the slow boat of yesteryear’s travel. Though you may arrive at your destination with incredible speed, the physical miles in between loved ones is the same and staying in touch remains important.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Attend old school, and don’t forget the old standbys of postcards and handwritten letters. How refreshing are those to discover in the mailbox!
Step2
Phone home. Technology has advanced at such a rate, that many cell phones are equipped with GMS (Global Systems for Mobile communications) enabling calls in Mexico, Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa and most of Asia. Check with your provider about costs and whether overseas service is available. If not, check out renting a cell phone.
Step3
Text it. Not cheap by any means, but if a cell phone works in the country you're visiting, texting should work, too. Same goes for sending photos. Best to check with your provider before traveling.
Step4
Shoot for the Skype. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), like Skype, makes phone calls with computers and the Internet. Rates are low and calls between Skype members are free.
Step5
Compose an email. Outside of the United States, Internet cafes are easy to find. They are a cheap way to check email and to call home.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before traveling, ask your service provider about the capability of your cell phone in a foreign land.
