Step 1
Decide what kind of band you want to start. Think about what instruments you can play and what musicians influence you. Write down a description of the sound you are looking for. Think about what other instruments you need for that sounds.
-
Step 2
Talk to friends who play music. Many of the greatest bands grow out of friendships. Even if your friends are just beginning to learn their instruments, get together and try it out anyway.
-
Step 3
Look at musician ads. Craigslist, local newspapers, and billboards at your local music store are all great places to find advertisements by musicians seeking musicians. Contact anyone with similar interests.
-
Step 4
Post your own advertisement. If you have a specific vision, describe it in detail. Be sure to include what instruments you need and your contact information.
-
Step 5
Set up a first practice. Musicians – particularly amateur musicians – are kind of flaky. It is unlikely that you will be able to get everyone to meet the first time. Nonetheless, if you can find one or two other people to try things out, you can start to build your group.
-
Step 6
Keep contacting people until you find a group you click with. Practice with the group you have assembled in the mean time. If you don't start playing right away, people will tend to drift off to other projects. Just two people can start a music project going and begin to write some songs.
