Wondering just how to eat star fruit? There are many ways to enjoy this delicious fruit, produced by the carambola tree species and also called kamranga, or five finger. In Western cuisine, it is most often used as an edible garnish; however, in many cultures it is prized for use as a juice, made into wine or eaten plain. Here's how to eat a star fruit.

      Pick ripe star fruit

      Pick a star fruit, either from the tree, farmer's market or grocery store purchases. Allow to ripen at room temperature for several days after picking from the tree.

      Slice ripe star fruit after rinsing clean. Eat by itself as a snack or side dish.

      Use star fruit slices as garnishes on drinks, including smoothies and mixed drinks.

      Star Fruit Flag

      Make a fruit-and-veggie tray that looks like a flag. Use blueberries for the blue background and place star fruit slices on top. Make red and white stripes using cauliflower and strawberries or cherry tomatoes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can grow your own star fruit trees in warm climates, including Florida, Hawaii and Costa Rica.

  • Star fruit is high in Vitamin C and is also a good source of fiber and Vitamin A.

  • There is a sweet variety of star fruit as well as a tart one. The sweeter is better suited for fruit dishes and the tart one is good for making pickle juice.

  • Avoid eating star fruit if you have kidney ailments as the fruit contains oxalic acid. Star fruit juice is especially troublesome to those with kidney problems.
