Using bias tape to hem the top of a skirt (or: how to create a waistband on a skirt).

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • matching fabric for the band
  • needle
  • thread

Step1
Cut your bias tape out of your matching fabric
The length should be long enough to go fit the hips of the wearer, leaving allowance for zippers if necessary. The width should be the most flattering for the wearer's body type.
Double the width.

Leave a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Step2
Finish the bias tape
Fold the seam allowance in under the bias tape to create the smooth finished edge.
Step3
Placing and basting
Place the bias tape on your garment, on top of all the layers. Fold your other half under all the layers. Keep the seam allowance in place.

Baste if necessary by hand or by using a machine.
Step4
Sew into place.
