Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • your book to be signed
  • computer and internet access
  1. Step 1

When you are ready to begin prospecting for venues to sign in, research all the bookstores in your area. Once you create your signing start making personal visits or phone calls, or send an email. Have a brief pre-planned pitch about your book, and tell them you are a local author. Ask what information they require to consider an author for a book signing.

  2. Step 2

If they invite you to do a book signing, send out a news release about your book signing two weeks prior to the date to local news media. The store will probably do this, but it never hurts to alert the media yourself.

  3. Step 3

Write your own announcement for the bookstore to publicize the event and to make in store announcement on the day of the signing. Make it short and brief. several times. .

  4. Step 4

At the bookstore, don't just sit at the table they have for you. Don't wait customers to come to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the store or someone else takes photos of the event be sure to get copies. These will be great to include in your writers resume.
  • Don’t forget the important step of sending a thank-you note to the store staff and those responsible for media coverage you receive. A thank you goes a long way. Too many authors fail to complete this simple task.
