Having a cat is enjoyable. They are affectionate, funny and clean. They keep their bodies tidy and expect the same of their litter box. Cleaning your cat’s litter box is simple. It should be done at least once a month, but if your cat is smelly please do a full cleaning more often. But by following these simple steps you’ll cut down on your monthly cleaning time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Rubber or latex gloves (optional)
  • Box of litter
  • Litter scooper
  • Paper towels
  • Brown paper or plastic bag
  • Bleach free cleanser
  • Boiling hot water (optional)

Step1
Put on a pair of gloves.
Step2
Empty the litter tray into the bag. Make sure to scrape off any clumps with a scooper.
Step3
Spray cleanser onto the tray and hood, if you use one.
Step4
Pour boiling water into tray. Let it sit for a few minutes.
Step5
Empty the contents into the toilet. Wipe the tray clean with paper towels.
Step6
Refill with litter tray at least half-way and place the hood back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Scoop the litter when your cat does the deed. (Sounds like it would be common sense, but you never know)
  • To cut down on odor and chemicals to your cat and home, try an all natural clumping litter.
  • Try to clean the litter box near an open window to decrease inhalation of chemical smells.
  • Pregnant women should not clean the litter box.

on 4/25/2008 I've never poured boiling water in there before. I usually wipe with antibacterial wipes but I will try your suggestion. Thanks

on 4/21/2008 I have also got in the practice of doing something "in between" those deep "once a month" cleanings... powder carpet freshners or baking soda. After I dump all the cat litter I will sprinkle the powder (maybe 1 Tbsp) and than put the desired amount of cat little on top of it. **Do not put too much of the powder due to it's strong odor. Aka... a little bit goes a long way.
