How to overcome addiction

Addiction...addictions are everywhere. Millions of American's deal with addictions everyday, from hard core illegal drug use to overeating. I would like to share my personal story of addiction in hopes to help someone else. Please let me explain how to seek treatment for whatever addiction may be haunting you.

I wish you all the best of luck, and strength. You can break free from your personal hell, whatever that addiction my be. However, you must be willing to put in the work and live one day at a time.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Get real with yourself, stop lying and be honest about your addiction to yourself and those who are close to you.

  2. Step 2

    Realize that your human, and that you can't get help alone.

  3. Step 3

    Once you have realized what your addiction is and have been honest with yourself and those around you, go to treatment.

  4. Step 4

    In treatment focus on you, forget the outside world. You have to go deep inside yourself to find what caused this addiction in the first place and you can't do that worry about external factors while getting professional help.

  5. Step 5

    When you are able to leave the treatment center that is best for you, join a 12 step program. You must maintain what you have learned, and learn new positive behaviors.

  6. Step 6

    Keep a journal of your progress, so that you can look back at your journey to recovery. This will show you just how you have grown over time and your previous thought process.

  7. Step 7

    Speak to someone weekly about how your feeling, and if your having any cravings.

  8. Step 8

    Always make sure that you have a support system of people that you love and trust who will tell you the truth and not enable you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember this addiction did not happen over night, so it will take sometime to heal your body, mind, and emotions.
  • Make sure to change the people that you used with or made you feel like turning to your addiction.
  • It is also important to keep a list of the things that trigger your addiction and learn behaviors that help you deal with them so that you will not use when are faced with those triggers.
  • Don't forget that if you dealt with an addiction, there is a very good chance that you have addictive personality and you need to be careful of just how much you are doing something in excess.
  • Don't get to cocky or confident, you will set your self up for failure. Always remain humble and realize that your just a step away from relapse. Your never too good for it too happen to you. Some addicts have twenty and thirty years sober and something will trigger them and they go out and use. That is why using all your tools ( Support system, sponsor, etc.) and staying away from the people and places that made you use is so important.
