Step1
To experience the flavor of Rhinebeck, stay at the historic Beekman Arms, said to be the oldest inn in America. George Washington and other dignitaries have stayed at the Beekman Arms, a lovely mansion located in the heart of the village center. Delamater Inn, a Gothic style guest house also owned by the Beekman Arms, is another great choice for lodging.
Step2
Enjoy a walking tour of the Rhinebeck village. The Rhinebeck Chamber of Commerce website discusses the history of Rhinebeck (see Resources below). Notice interesting architectural details on local buildings as you stroll village streets, like South Street.
Step3
Relax and renew at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, the nation's largest holistic center. Omega offers classes and workshops on topics like health, wellness and spirituality. If you are looking for a retreat, the Institute is located on about 200 peaceful acres, just a short drive from the village center.
Step4
Indulge in some old fashioned fun for the whole family at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. View the collection of vintage airplanes and enjoy a weekend airshow. The truly brave will want to go for a ride in a biplane.
Step5
Attend a fair or festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. The Dutchess County Fair, held each August, is a popular family event with food, animals, games, rides and attractions. The Dutchess County Fairgrounds website contains a full list of events held here year-round, including the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival, antique shows, car shows and craft fairs (see Resources below.)
Step6
Explore cultural events at nearby Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. The Gehry-designed Fisher Center for the Arts at Bard is a hub for the best in dance, music and performance; don't miss Bard SummerScape and the Bard Music Festival held every August.
Step7
Stroll Market Street, the Rhinebeck village's main shopping area. Here you'll find chic little boutiques selling the hottest designer fashions, unusual clothing and gift shops, an old fashioned department store, and fine restaurants. Locals dine at Foster's for excellent American fare. For a quick coffee break while shopping, stop at Samuel's or Bread Alone; both have counters by the front window, great for watching the crowds go by on the weekend.
