Mozilla Firefox is the coolest browser I have ever used. With it's tabbed browsing and ease of use, it has become one of the most popular browsers around. One cool feature that Firefox boasts is the ability to add a skin or theme to change the look and feel of your browser. How do you add your own custom theme? Just follow the steps below and I'll lead you through it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • An installed version of Mozilla FireFox
Step1
Open up Firefox.
Step2
At the very top of your browser you will find a series of drop down menus.

You will want to click on the one called Tools.
Step3
Once in the Tools menu, scroll down and click on Add-Ons.

This will open a new box on your screen.
Step4
In this new box, you will see two large buttons at the top. One is Extensions and the other is Themes.

Click on Themes.
Step5
Click on Get Themes at the bottom right hand side of the box.

This will open a new tab in Firefox for the Mozilla website where you can choose and install your theme.
Step6
Minimize the Add-ons box or move it to the side. You will need it once you are ready to install your theme.
Step7
In new tab that Firefox opened for you, you will see a list of theme categories that you can choose from.

You can look for themes within a certain category, take a look at the most popular themes, or check out themes that are new or updated. You can also choose to browse all themes.

Browse around until you find a theme you like.
Step8
Clicking on a theme name will take you to a preview page where you can see what the theme looks like. You will also find a brief description and important details including what version of Firefox you can install the theme on and an update history. You can also read reviews from fellow Firefox users who have installed the themes and tried them out.
Step9
Once you have chosen a theme, simply click on the big green Install Now button on the theme preview page.
Step10
Now you will want to go back to the Add-On box that you minimized or moved.

(Don't worry if you closed the box. Firefox will automatically open if for you again when you click install.)
Step11
The box will now say "You have asked to install the following item."

Click Install Now.
Step12
Now you Add-Ons box will show the installation progress bar. Once it is complete, it will say "Install completed successfully."

For your theme to work, you will have to press Restart Firefox button at the bottom right hand corner of the box.

(Don't worry any tabs, you have opened will be restored when Firefox restarts.)
Step13
You're almost done!

Once Firefox has restated, open up the Add-Ons box again.

(Remember, this is under the Tools drop down menu at the top of your browser.)
Step14
Click on the Themes button again.
Step15
Locate the theme you just installed and click on it.
Step16
Click on Use Theme.

This will instruct you to restart Firefox again.

(This time you will want to make sure you save any tabs that you have open. They will not be restored with this restart.)
Step17
Close the Add-Ons box and restart Firefox.
Step18
Your theme should now be installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not happy with your theme, you can always repeat the steps above to change it.
  • You can also go back to the default skin at anytime by opening the Add-Ons box and clicking on the Firefox(default) theme. Just click Use Theme and restart Firefox.

on 2/22/2008 Thank you for this tutorial. Now if I could use my Google with it (which I have up there on the right), but make it open in a new window, then I would be happy. Can you write an article for me on that, and send me a message when you do? ;)
