Been out sick or missed school for another reason? Need to know how to make an excuse letter for your teacher or school administrator? Whether you need an excuse letter for a planned absence or one that already happened, here are the basics. Grab a pen (or your computer) and let's get started.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Write the date of the note (preferably the date the note will be handed in) at the top of the paper.

    Address the excuse letter to the recipient by writing "To: Mrs. Smith" (insert your recipient's name) after the date.

    Note who the excuse letter is from. generally, it must be from the parent or guardian unless the student is over age 18.

    Write what the excuse letter is about by stating "Re: (student's name and absence dates)."

    Create the body of the excuse note, stating why the student was absent or will be absent. Keep it simple, and attach a doctor's note if applicable. Excuse notes for sickness are often the most basic. See sample letter pictured at left for a planned absence ... that is basically how to make an excuse letter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep it simple and to the point. Often, the shorter the excuse, the better.
  • Learn your school's policy for excuse letters, including who may turn them in and when they need to be received relative to the missed school days.
