What story is complete without a hero? The hero of your tween book needs to be someone younger readers can identify with. Read on for some tips to ensure that the main characters of your book will be heroic in the eyes of your readers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your writing tools
  • Imagination
  1. Step 1

Answer the following questions. What constitutes a hero? What qualities do certain heroes have that make them exceptional? How does your hero possess these qualities? Who are your personal heroes and why. Make notes.

  2. Step 2

Every hero needs a story. What is your book about? Write down the premise in a few words.

  3. Step 3

Who is going to be the hero of your book? Why? Identify the characteristics that are common to heroes, and recognize qualities that are exceptional in certain heroes. How does your hero possess these qualities?

  4. Step 4

Heroes don’t have to be Superman or Wonder Woman. They can be the kid living down the block. It is how they deal with adversity that makes them heroes. Anne Frank is heroic in our eyes because of the way she faced tragic events in her life

  5. Step 5

In your story, how is your hero going to be heroic. Is it through his or her actions or how they are an inspiration to others? Both work. Be sure to give your hero enough flaws so that we can identify with them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Examine works of art and read about famous heroes in books and stories. Often, a historical hero is a regular guy or gal who did something heroic when it was needed. This might be the case with your hero.
