Things You'll Need:
- Bald Cypress (Taxodium Distichum) seeds
- Dirt
- Sand
- Plastic container
-
Step 1
Place the seeds in water and soak for 3 days. This will allow the hard seed coats to swell and soften. Check the seeds to make sure their hard coat has softened. If not, continue soaking for another day and check again.
-
Step 2
Make a container of 50 percent dirt and 50 percent sand. The size of the container and amount of soil will depend on the number of seeds. Saturate the dirt mixture with water.
-
Step 3
Place the seeds on top of the dirt mixture and store in a cold place, like a refrigerator, for 90 days. This follows the natural cycle of the seed and germination as it occurs naturally. Remember to keep the dirt mixture saturated the entire time.
-
Step 4
After the 90 days, the seeds can be planted outdoors in damp soil. The other option is to take the plastic container outside and continue keeping the soil damp. The seedlings will sprout as long as the dirt mixture is saturated with water--or as long as they are planted in damp soil.
-
Step 5
Although the Bald Cypress prefers a wet environment it can grow in well drained sandy soil, also. It will reach maximum heights in warmer climates. The bald cypress will normally grow 16 to 20 inches in the first 2 years.
