Resize Columns in Windows Explorer
Resize Columns in Windows Explorer

It may seem like the columns in Windows Explorer are static but they are not. At times, you'll find that some information is obscured. By following these steps, you can resize the columns so that you can view the entire filename if required.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open up Windows Explorer.

  2. Step 2

At the Column headings on top, you will see them subdivided. In between will be short lines.

  3. Step 3

Place your mouse on these lines. Click and drag left or right to get the proper width.

  4. Step 4

When done, simply release the mouse button and the column width will be saved.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not drag it towards another line before that. It'll make the column disappear, which will not be easy to retrieve.

on 5/18/2008 This doesn't work for me. If to the right of every column there is a arrow down. If you click on it a window pops up where you can set the groupings etc. Right click on a column gives 2 width options that suck!
Point is that the mouse cursor WILL NOT change in the 'cross type' so that you can click and drag the column width!
Please help how to get this funtion back?
thanks.
