How to Change a Windows XP Serial Number


If you have accidentally purchased a pirated copy of Windows XP and find that you cannot update it, or are getting error messages, you might have to reenter a new serial number. Read on to learn how to change a Windows XP serial number.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows XP
  • New serial number
  • Click "Start" and go to "Run." Enter the following string:

    %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

  • Click "Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows" and then click "Next."

  • Click "Change Product Key."

  • You will now be able to enter the valid serial number for your Windows XP.

  • Press "Update" and close the window.

  • Now restart your computer. Your version of Windows XP should now be updated with the new serial number.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can always choose to cancel before proceeding if unsure.
  • Do not enter an incorrect or illegal serial number. Windows will need to be reactivated afterwards.
