Did you know you can file your income tax return using a computer on the Internet without leaving home or your office? It's a fairly quick process and most websites do not charge and will even save your information for future years.

Some of these sites even offer services like audit insurance, investment planning for next year, professional tax advice, archived records, and state filing. These services could prove invaluable.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Tax information
  • Tax website(s)
  • Fountain pen
  • Microsoft Windows
  1. Step 1

Gather your income tax materials and totals as needed.

  2. Step 2

Research and decide which schedules, if any you will need. For example, if you have a home and/or business, you will need a program on the Internet that includes the proper forms.

  3. Step 3

Once you decide on the forms and services you will need, then it's time to look for a website that offers service and reliability for your money. Be aware that different form packages and services will have varying prices.

  4. Step 4

Make a list because you may not remember the information clearly later on.
Use your pen and notebook to take notes on cost(s) and services offered. Look below for a list of common websites to get you started.

  5. Step 5

When you decide on a website, you will asked to register with a username and password. Take note of this, you will need this information later on.
If you change your mind while filling out information in the screens, you do not have to pay. You will not have to pay on any website until you use them to file your taxes with the IRS.

  6. Step 6

Take your time filling out the tax information and answering the on screen prompts. Try to choose a block of time where you know you will not be interrupted.

Know you can take as long as you need within the IRS deadline of April 15, 2008. You could complete a few screens a day or do it all at once, it is entirely up to you. If this is your first time filing by yourself, it is good to take it slowly until you are more comfortable.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not want to attempt this yourself, places like H&R block will do your taxes online for free.
  • If you want a professional to check your return for errors or support you in case of an audit, consider adding these optional services to your return.
  • This is not meant to replace the advice of an accountant or other tax advisor.
