Be well prepared to enjoy nature the next time you take a day hike.
There are thousands of trails to explore which take you to scenic
wonders and you will also get a great workout.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • sunscreen or umbrella (summer or winter)
  • comfortable running shoes or hiking boots
  • plenty of drinking water
  • trail mix or small nutritious snack for energy
  • phone
  • lip balm, a towel, organic mosquito repellant (near water)
  • pocket knife

    How To prepare for a day Hike

  1. Step 1

    You must choose a destination.
    They have great info on National Park website and State Parks website.
    You may also find local county or regional recreation areas.

  2. Step 2

    Obtain a detailed trail map of the area.
    Map Quest will help you get to your destination.

  3. Step 3

    Pack your day pack with your supplies.
    Set a time limit so you are not hiking in the dark.
    Print your maps and take them with you.

  4. Step 4

    You are ready to hike.
    If you drove a car, make sure to double check it is locked and take your
    wallet, purses or credit cards with you.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are in a national Forest, they will have a ranger headquarter where you can obtain a map of the areas trails and campgrounds.
  • Stay on the trail because in areas covered with grass and bushes are rattlesnake habitat if you are in a warmer climate or in the southwestern U.S.
  • If you take your dog bring his leash and check for any trail restrictions,
  • If horses use the same trail sometimes dogs may not be allowed.
