How to Find a Freelance Photographer for Head-Shots

Finding a photographer is an incredibly easy task. Merely putting an ad up on Craigslist will yield many responses. However, finding a photographer who specializes in head-shots is a bit trickier, not to mention you obviously want to be satisfied and pay a reasonable price.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Time
  • Money

Step1
Think about who you are and why you want head-shots. Are you in a band? Are you a comedian? Author? Whatever the case may be, try to find photographers that specialize in your area. If you perform in a band, try to notice if there are any photographers frequenting venues where you perform. Chances are that there will be.
Step2
If you do find photographers at venues you perform at, approach them first. Chances are they are already familiar with you and would know the type of work you are looking for. Ask them if they do head-shots and if the answer is yes, ask to see a portfolio and their rates.
Step3
If you do not find any photographers and really do not know where to start, put an ad up on Craigslist or something of that nature. Say exactly what it is you do and what you are looking for. You'll get tons of replies, and some may not specialize in your field of interest. Check out your replies, check out the rates, and if some of these photographers have websites, as some will, check those out as well.
Step4
Once you've selected a photographer, dress appropriately. Tell him what you're going for, be it serious, comical, edgy, dark or light. Remember this is your image, and you need to be in control. On the same note, allow the photographer to give suggestions and use his creativity. After all, he is a professional at this. Together, the two of you will come up with a wonderful work of art.

Tips & Warnings

  • ALWAYS ask about rates up front. Do not pay by the hour but pay by the project if possible. Most photographers will accommodate this request.
  • ALWAYS ask to see a portfolio. There are many amateurs out there, and if you're paying somebody, she should have talent.
