Kids love playing basketball, so why not introduce a basketball thematic unit into your classroom? During this unit the kids will learn to skip count by 2's, even and odd numbers, basketball vocabulary and a ton of gross motor skills. They will love this unit! Here are some ways to teach it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Buy the kids headbands from a website like Oriental Trading Co. (see Resources below) and divide them up into teams.
Step2
Build a little basketball court in the classroom and have the kids keep score on wipe boards while counting by 2's.
Step3
Play Mystery Word with basketball vocabulary (see link in Resources below).
Step4
Have the kids create cool team signs.
Step5
Create basketball word searches.
Step6
Buy some great basketball books for kids.
Step7
Create basketball cutting exercises for the kids to do.
Step8
Play Reverse Mystery Word with basketball teams and vocabulary.
Step9
Have the kids do basketball art.
Step10
Take the kids on a field trip to your local college women's basketball game. It is not as expensive as it sounds!
