How to Survive Turning Forty

Is turning 40 really so bad? Is turning 40 really so bad?

Rate: (4 Ratings)

While some believe 40 is the new 30, many women and men find the landmark birthday the official entry into middle age--and a little depressing. Aging is both a state of mind and a physiological fact. To survive turning 40 it is important to address the reality and how we feel about it. And, believe it now or not, 40 can be good.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Doctor visit
  • Skin care products
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Hobbies

Survive Turning 40

Step1
Get a health checkup. This serves two primary purposes for 40 year-olds. This allows you to ensure that your changing health care needs are addressed and you can learn how to ward off future problems, from heart disease to osteoporosis. Additionally, a visit to one's physician can alleviate unfounded fear when new but minor changes occur.
Step2
Take a good look at your life, is it going the direction you planned? Rather than fill your days with regret, if you are dissatisfied, do something about it. Maybe an adjustment of goals and strategy is needed. As long as progress is made, however, the more content you should be.
Step3
A good diet can improve your state of body and mind. Re-evaluate your diet and exercise program. Life as a size 4 or 6 may become increasingly elusive, yet don't give up too easily. Survive the turning 40 metabolism by exercising more, and eating less if necessary. Yet, be realistic about which size you should be. Aim for good health and looking good rather than mere thinness.
Step4
Address pre-menopausal symptoms with a gynecologist. From acne to increased sweating, hormonal changes can make a woman feel increasingly unattractive. Some disorders can be treated homeopathically and others with over-the-counter or prescription medications. Medications may be unneeded, but exploring your options is wise.
Step5
Add antioxidants and mineral supplements designed to improve health, energy and slow down aging, but avoid anti-aging or energy products that sound too good to be true. Some of the more popular choices include Omega-3 oils, Calcium, Vitamin E, soy protein and Ginkgo Biloba.
Step6
New hobbies can invigorate. Address empty nest syndrome or divorce and better survive turning 40, by making your life more entertaining and worthwhile. Explore hobbies, clubs and volunteer work for starters.
Step7
Be realistic but clear about your looks. From gray hair to fine lines and wrinkles, to survive turning 40 both acceptance and attention are needed. If you want fewer wrinkles, take action. For non-surgical help, investigate products with alpha hydroxy, retinol, Gaba and other anti-oxidants to see which will work best for your skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try a new hairstyle if yours is outdated and give your wardrobe a closer inspection.
  • Laughter is the best anti-aging technique available.
  • Enjoy life, you are still young to much of the population.

on 2/13/2008 You have a good sense of humor JP and that is essential. The choice seems to be to laugh or cry, and I hope to keep doing the former. :-)

on 2/12/2008 Turning 40 was a breaze. As I am at the end of the 6th decade and looking at 60 it isn't all that easy. Parts start dropping off and hairs begin to settle in and grow where they shouldn't.

on 2/12/2008 I look forward to your article. It is increasing difficult in today's society to cope with aging. Attitude does play a big role, but, for woman at least, taking steps to look the best we can (rather than like a celebrity) seems to help with attitude -- on the good days anyway. :-)

on 2/12/2008 Good article buzewriter; I just finished an article on this subject of getting older. It's something that none of us can avoid. What we do, and how we react to it is all that is in our control.
