When you live in the Midwest, long winters are a reality. Finding ways to enjoy the long cold days and nights can sometimes be challenging, particularly if you did not grow up here. I can't lie; I'd much rather be in sunny California than in the middle of a blizzard any day.

But that's me. Children are different; they love the snow, and my son is no exception. So, in my effort to avoid passing on my personal bias for the cold, dreary days to my son, I decided to start a tradition that would make winter a bit more exciting: make ice cream out of snow.

I learned this recipe from my mother who did the same thing for my brothers and I when we lived in Norway as teenagers.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large bowl of fresh snow
  • food coloring (optional)

Tips & Warnings
  • Time is of the essence; you have to work fast or the consistency will be runny.
  • Make sure you get clean snow. Fresh is best, but you still have to check for foreign particles in the snow.
  • Food coloring is an optional step. This is really for the kids.
  • Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow!
