Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Pre-made refrigerated loaf of Italian bread
- 8 oz Monterey jack cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 6.5 oz. sliced canned mushrooms
- (if you use fresh mushrooms cook and drain the extra juice)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 10 ounce package of chopped spinach, thawed and drained and patted dry
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- greased cookie sheet
- waxed paper
- flour
- rolling pin
Step1
The key to this recipe is to make sure the vegetables are all dry. The mushrooms should be drained well. The spinach should have the excess water squeezed out and then patted dry with paper towels. Once this is done, add the spinach, mushrooms and onions together in a bowl.
Step2
Set oven to preheat to 375 F. Grease the cookie sheet. Get a piece of waxed paper approximately 12 inches square. Sprinkle flour onto waxed paper.
Step3
Remove pre-made loaf of Italian bread from refrigerator. Open package and remove dough. Unroll dough to a rectangular shape onto a floured piece of waxed paper. Roll dough until it is ¼ inch thick.
Step4
The oregano, basil and garlic powder can be sprinkled evenly over the dough. Place vegetable mix onto the dough evenly leaving one inch on each side not covered. Sprinkle the cheese over the vegetables once again, leaving one inch on each side not covered.
Step5
Gently roll dough into the shape of a loaf. Place overlapping edge of dough down onto the greased cookie sheet. Use a sharp knife an make a slice in the dough approximately every two inches.
Step6
Place stromboli in the oven. It should cook for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for about 10 minutes before slicing.
