With ever-changing trends, many employees are coming into work dressed for a party. While office dress codes have slackened some, employers are seeing a noticeable decline in the professional attire of their employees. Clients are more likely to do business with someone who has taken the time to “dress for success,” so here are some rules to follow in order to look your best for business.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Clothes with solid colors and simple patterns
  • Iron
  • Business-appropriate clothing

Look Your Best for Business

Step1
Choose simple colors. While bold and playful patterns may be appropriate for a night on the town, tone your wardrobe colors down a notch for work. That’s not to say that your clothes need to be drab, but you may want to consider just one bright color against a more neutral tone. Leave that red dress in the closet for Friday night and opt for a red shirt with a gray skirt or pants.
Step2
Look neat. One of the current fashion trends is to wear shirts un-tucked, definitely a more casual look. In the workplace, though, the trend should be to keep your shirttails tucked smoothly into your pants or skirt. Also make sure that you iron your clothes; a wrinkled outfit can give the appearance that you pulled that outfit out of the dirty laundry.
Step3
Be modest. While much of the clothing today is either low-cut or low-rise, you shouldn’t be wearing those pieces to work. Bending down to pick up something can be difficult if you’re busy holding onto your pants with one hand! Trust me, your coworkers aren’t interested in seeing what you chose to wear underneath your outfit!
Step4
Choose clothes that are comfortable for you. Just because you’re trying to dress professionally doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable all day. You may be wearing a suit; but if you’re constantly scratching and pulling at it all day, you won’t appear any more professional than the person who showed up in jeans and a t-shirt! Many clothing companies are creating business outfits that are cotton blends or other lightweight fabrics.
Step5
Wear outfits that will attract attention your way. When selecting your outfit for the day, consider who you are trying to impress. The colors and styles you choose can attract your boss’ attention in the right way. Since your clothing is the first thing people notice when they see you, your outfit choice can send a positive message of success!

  • Choose clothes that suit your taste but have a professional flair.
  • Piece bold colors with neutral prints.
  • Buy simple accessories to complement your outfit.
  • Don't wear low-cut blouses or tight pants.
  • Don't wear dirty or wrinkled clothes.
