How to Tell When a Long Distance Relationship is Over

You thought you met Mr. Right. He could do no wrong. You went on dates, spent countless hours whispering sweet nothings on the phone, and mapped out every aspect of your future life together. Then, one day, a bomb was dropped on your relationship. Maybe your significant other was transferred across the country for their job. Perhaps you both lived apart your entire relationship. Whatever the circumstance surrounding your long distance relationship, knowing when it's over may not be black or white.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A long distance relationship
  • A phone
  • Email
  • Good intuition
Step1
One of the major causes of long distance relationships going awry is the inherent difficulty of sustaining such relationships. You don't see your partner every day and may only catch a glimpse of them once a month, in some instances. One of the first signs your relationship may be heading for a fiasco is getting a sense that it's over. If all were okay, you wouldn't have that dread in the pit of your stomach.
Step2
You notice fluctuations in your communication patterns. For instance, if your significant other always calls you before he or she goes to sleep and suddenly stops, it could be a bad sign. Give them the benefit of the doubt, but interrupted communication can be a sign your long distance relationship is almost over.
Step3
Trips and weekend getaways occur less or even stop. If your boyfriend always makes a point of meeting you halfway every other weekend, but expresses an interest in cutting your routine, he might as well be holding a red flag.
Step4
Holidays are primarily spent apart. Let's face it, the holidays are a time for loved ones to celebrate together. If your girlfriend hates flying a few hours to spend Christmas and Thanksgiving with you, how can you expect her to want to continue on in a long-term relationship?
Step5
You notice a change in their tone of voice or shorter emails when they once sent page-long letters. Everyone has a life and personal responsibilities, but if you notice a change in how they speak or converse with you via email, your long distance relationship may be on the rocks.
Step6
You hear rumors that your significant other is seeing other people. Sure, your mind and heart may pray it's not true. But, you cannot ignore that deep, gut feeling you get, your intuition. If a part of you senses they may not be faithful to you, it may very well be a reality.
Step7
They hint about a life spent single or mention breaking up. Even if this only happens in a joking manner, it may be a cause for suspicion. After all, if you're on cloud nine with your partner, the last thing you'd do is mention a split.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that not every long distance relationship ends. Your's may be the exception.
  • Never listen to a friend or acquaintance that encourages you to cheat on your partner. They most likely like you "in that way" or want someone to scour for dates with.

on 7/16/2008 I made this LDR survey/poll. It lets you compare your LDR with others. Includes questions about how many miles apart you are, phone calls, frequency of visits, and how many of us worry about our bf/gf cheating while we're away. Here's the link http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/347366

on 2/6/2008 Favefive, they can be very difficult, as I found out the hard way. Kudos to your brother and his girlfriend if they can keep it going, I think as long as both partners are committed, there shouldn't be a problem. The only problem is when one of the individuals' heart isn't in it completely.

on 2/6/2008 You pointed out all the warning signs...my brother and his girlfirend are thousands of miles apart, separated by continents. It can be very challenging to maintain a relationship that way...thank goodness for webcam, they "see" each other constantly.
