Are you a woman about to travel alone for the first time? Already travel alone? Here are some safety pointers I use when I travel alone on business. Alot are common sense, but it is always good to refresh yourself on these pointers

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hotel
  • Safety
  • Travel documents
  • Camera
  • Purse
  • Embassies
  1. Step 1

    Cell phone:
Is your cell phone going to work where you are going? If you are going internationally, invest in an international cell phone. Make sure to give the number to someone you trust.

  2. Step 2

    Your travel plans:
Make sure you leave your flight info, hotel name and phone numbers with someone at home; family member, good friend, or your company.

  3. Step 3

Request a hotel room that is "not" near the elevator. If your hotel is busy, it is likely that you will hear other guests talking near the elevator. You'll sleep better at night and it is also a safety precaution that others do not see you leave and enter your room alone.

  4. Step 4

Request an inside hallway room that is not near a stairwell. This simple step is for your own safety.

  5. Step 5

    Closets and Bathroom:
Keep your door open while you check your closets and bathroom.

  6. Step 6

    Do Not Disturb Hanger:
When I get to my hotel room, the first thing I do is place the "Do Not Disturb" door hanger on the outside door knob. Keep this on the doorknob, even when you leave your room. It is a deterrent from anyone entering.

  7. Step 7

    Door Locks:
Check that your locks work properly and that their is a lock on your window.

  8. Step 8

    Telephone:
Make sure your telephone in the room works. (I have had rooms where the phone was not turned on)

  9. Step 9

    Your purse:
When you are about and traveling, carry your purse tight to your body. If you travel alot, you may want to invest in a purse that had strong wire inside the strap, so that it cannot be cut.

  10. Step 10

    Identification:
Keep your license, passport AND the hotel business card on you at all times

  11. Step 11

    Walking:
Walk in a group, even if you don't belong to them. You won't be singled out as "alone."

  12. Step 12

    Camera:
Don't look like a tourist when walking the streets. Carry your camera in your purse, or under your jacket or coat.

  13. Step 13

    You're drinks:
Watch your drink and keep it close to you at all times. You don't want anyone slipping something in it!

  14. Step 14

    Destinations:
Know where you are going and how to get there. Map out ahead of time your route to the place you are going. If you get lost, walk into a store and ask directions. Don't ask a stranger.

  15. Step 15

    Jewelry:
Don't advertise your good stuff by wearing it.

  16. Step 16

If you are in a foreign country, know where your countries embassy is with the relevant phone numbers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always be and act alert. Someone that sees you are confidant is less likely to approach you.
  • Do not offer any unnecessary information to a stranger.
  • Dress properly for the destination of your day. If you are in a foreign country, respect their policies. Mosques and churches usually want you to be covered. Carry a bandana or a kerchief to cover your head and shoulders.

on 4/14/2009 Well-written article on how to travel alone safely as a woman. As a woman who has traveled abroad alone as well as having lived in NYC for many years, I feel your tip on acting confident is very good. If you walk with a strong, confident stride, you are much less apt to be bothered.
