Olive oil is very obviously an oil that is pressed from olives and is most frequently used in cooking. It has a high content of monounsaturated fats that are heart healthy for you and taste great! However, few people know that olive oil also has many handy, alternative uses all over the household.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Kitchen Uses

Step1
Let's start with the obvious--olive oil is often used as a healthy fat for cooking. It can be used in salad dressings, to sauté or cook meats and vegetables and in sauces.
Step2
Olive oil can be used to shine stainless steel and brass in the kitchen. It helps prevent corrosion, tarnish and keeps them from getting dull.
Step3
Use as a hand scrub after cleaning, cooking, butchering chicken and other grimy kitchen tasks. Rub your hands with olive oil and scrub with some sugar then rinse.

Bathroom Uses

Step1
Olive oil can be used as an alternative conditioner. It adds an incredible amount of moisture to your hair. You should only use it about once a week, but it will clean your hair well and help prevent frizz too.
Step2
Olive oil adds great moisture to the skin, and it doesn't evaporate or dry out, so it makes a great companion to shaving. It allows for a close shave and can then also be used to moisturize the skin after.
Step3
Olive oil can be used as an ingredient in soaps. There are no scents or additives in olive oil, so it won't affect the fragrance of the soap. It can be used as a natural cleaner while still adding moisturizer to your skin.
Step4
As an emollient, a natural softener for the skin. Olive oil is great for your nails and cuticles.

Living Room Uses

Step1
Olive oil can be used as furniture polish. Put a little bit of oil on a soft rag and rub evenly over wooden furniture.
Step2
"Fill" nicks and scratches in wood by dabbing a decent amount of olive oil onto a cloth and filling the nick. Rub smooth and clean. Although the nick is not gone, the wood will swell a little fuller and it will be less visible on the furniture.
Step3
Silence squeaky doors, hinges and joints. With a cloth, apply olive oil to the squeaky joint so that it lubricates and relieves the door of the squeak.

Other Uses

Step1
Olive oil can be used to clean gardening tools. Mix olive oil and water to clean off any dirt and grime buildup.
Step2
Clean muddy boots with your olive oil or polish leather shoes, making your footware shine.
Step3
Add a 1/4 to a 1/2 a teaspoon olive oil to your cat's food to help prevent hair balls and to add shine to your kitty's coat.

Tips & Warnings

  • For household purposes, use less expensive olive oils. They will still serve the same purpose. For consumption, the quality of the olive oil will obviously improve the taste.
