Teeth are a prominent feature on any face, and therefore, we are always encouraged to take care of our teeth. Since the teeth carry out a major function in the process of digestion, it is no wonder they are exposed to damage and staining. Being able to identify causes of teeth stain will help a person take the necessary steps to lessen and protect their teeth from discoloration and help their smiles stay attractive and healthy. So, identify the causes of teeth stains and smile brighter.

From Quick Guide: General Dental Health
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Certain medications a person takes can cause staining of the teeth. Antibiotics like tetracycline can cause the teeth of children to yellow, while the antibiotic minocyline can stain the adult teeth a bluish-grey tinge. There are also antihistamines that discolor teeth. Should these medications be prescribed, it may be beneficial to discuss with the physician or dentist measures to take to lessen teeth staining.

  2. Step 2

Genetics plays a part in the whiteness of teeth. So, look to your mother and father to get a glimpse at the future and potential of your own teeth's whiteness.

  3. Step 3

The aging process brings with it a normal wearing and discoloring of the teeth. This is mostly due to the thinning enamel on the teeth, which makes it easier for the tooth’s natural yellow- or brown-colored dentin layer to show through the thinning enamel.

  4. Step 4

Dental procedures like root canal can cause tooth stain. Basically, any tooth damage that results in the tooth dying will eventually discolor over time.

  5. Step 5

Drinking beverages that are dark colored can cause teeth staining. It is commonly known that beverages like coffee and tea will stain the teeth but so can soda, red wines, red fruit juices and even beer. It might be helpful to drink dark beverages through a straw and rinse the mouth with water afterwards.

  6. Step 6

Consuming colorful foods can discolor the teeth. Foods with heavy pigments, like cherries, blueberries, cranberries, and soy sauce may taste great, but they can linger on the teeth and cause them to stain. Always make sure to brush the teeth after eating foods known to stain the teeth.

  7. Step 7

Too much fluoride can contribute to teeth stains. Normally, fluoride is quite beneficial to the health of our teeth, but in excess, it can leave chalky white spots. To help avoid overuse of fluoride, a person should use about a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on their toothbrush.

  8. Step 8

Poor oral hygiene can definitely cause the teeth to discolor and look unattractive. Utilize proper brushing and flossing techniques to prevent teeth from discoloring. Improper oral care can allow bacteria and plaque to build up on and between the teeth, leaving them yellowish and green.

Tips & Warnings
  • Proper teeth brushing should be done for 3 minutes.
  • For severe or unsightly teeth stains, it may be necessary to speak to the dentist about techniques for whitening the teeth.
