How to Work From Home

Many people would love to be able to work from the comfort of their own home. However, finding a job that allows you to work from can be difficult. Knowing what is out there and how to avoid work at home scams is essential to becoming a successful individual working from home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Telephone
  • Internet Savvy
  • Perseverance

Step1
Start by finding some neutral work at home forums online that are not affiliated with any one company. Many of them will have folders for several work at home companies that list valuable information about these companies. Post and communicate with people who are already employed with these companies.
Step2
Never pay money to get a work at home job. The most that a legitimate company will ask for is for you to cover the cost of your background investigation. Typically, companies will require that you have certain equipment. However, legitimate companies will not request that you buy the equipment from them. They will either provide it for you or suggest where you may purchase it.
Step3
Consider the most common opportunities. Call centers, transcription services, tutoring and virtual assistant services are the most common legitimate work from home jobs. Call centers are by far the the easiest to get hired with and have the most available opportunities.
Step4
Keep in mind that applying for any work at home job, is not like applying for a job locally. There is far more competition and the hiring process can be lengthy. Companies that hire work at home employees or contractors are bombarded with applicants. They will require that you participate in a battery of test and applications to test you commitment. It also may take them longer to get back to you, because of the volume of applicants they have to weed through to get to your application.
Step5
Having worked from home for the past five years, I can tell you that it is a lesson in patience finding a legitimate job. However, there are many legitimate work from home jobs available. It simply takes time, motivation and perseverance to get a solid opportunity.

on 3/5/2008 Yes I agree Chantel! This happens to me quite frequently. People just don't get that you actually have work that needs to be completed.

on 3/5/2008 Great tips. I find that everyone assumes that, because I work from home, I have all the time in the world OR that it isn't really work. Those attitudes really anger me.
