Outdoor patio and garden areas are often overlooked when decorating a home. Your outdoor space should be an extension of your home. A great way to make your outdoor space inviting is to add your own personal touches. Here are some tips to personalize your garden design.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Home and garden magazines

Step1
Look through home and garden magazines to find photos of garden designs that appeal to you. Pay attention to plants, flowers, statues and fountains. Clip photos to take with you when you shop.
Step2
Consider including statuary in your garden design that represents things you love. For example, include a stone frog if you love amphibians. If you are spiritual, include a statue of a religious icon that represents your faith. If you are young at heart, include a whimsical fairy.
Step3
Include a fountain or other water feature in your garden design if you love water. Whether you love swimming, boating or water sports, a water feature can bring this love closer to home.
Step4
Think about color when selecting plants and statuary for your garden design. If you love a certain color, you can include plants, flowers and statues that include and compliment this color. If you love red, surround yourself with beautiful red flowers.
Step5
Welcome wildlife into your garden and patio area if you are an animal lover. Birdbaths, bird feeders, squirrel feeders and ponds all welcome critters into your outdoor space. Certain plants can also welcome wildlife such as butterflies.
Step6
Add a special seating area in your garden design that makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Surround the space with things you like to see, smell, feel, touch and hear. Make this a space that is your retreat when the weather is nice for reading or just relaxing.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not use your outdoor space often, try personalizing your garden. You might find yourself using the space more if you love the way it looks and feels.
  • Personal items in your garden often make great conversation starters when you have guests.
