How to Host a Housewarming Party

Moving into a new home is one of the landmark experiences in a person's life. This special occasion is enhanced by sharing it with family and friends. This article will help you prepare for such an event.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Invitations
  • Directions to your new home
  • Games to serve as ice breakers

Step1
The housewarming party should be conducted by the people moving into the house. This is a key point. Some parents and in-laws think it is there duty to take over this function for their children. I agree with "Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior." In this book of good etiquette the writer states, "If you aren't old enough to warm your own house, you aren't old enough to have one."
Step2
It is important to mail out invitations and don't rely on word of mouth. There are those who may come to your new house claiming to be the friend of a friend with nothing but bad intentions. I also suggest keeping the party somewhat small and under control, otherwise your guests may destroy your new home.
Step3
It would be a good idea to mail out directions with the invitations. You don't want to delay getting that new HDTV, because Uncle Bob couldn't find your place. He may get second thoughts and keep it himself!
Step4
Be prepared to give a grand tour of the new house. Make sure each room is free of boxes, clean and in order. Set a time later in the evening when all of your guests have arrived, so your guided tour will be a one shot deal and not an all night affair for every uncle Tom, Dick or Harry that show up a little late.
Step5
Have board and video games available to serve as ice breakers for those who usually feel uncomfortable at such gatherings.

Tips & Warnings

  • The house warming is similar in nature to a cocktail party.
  • This party may be semiformal.
  • Don't go into great detail about any of the security measures of your new home.
