Where do you want to be in ten years? No, not Hawaii--your career. You can have fun with your career, but setting career goals can help. It isn’t easy for everyone, so here's a list of things you should do when setting career goals.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put it down on paper. Thinking about a career goal is different than writing it down. Writing it down symbolizes action, because it makes you more serious. It outlines what you want and what you are willing to do. Set a yearly goal for yourself. For example, if you are making $30,000 a year, and have the promise of a raise or more money for effort, write down $40,000 on a piece of paper and tape it above your desk. This will be a reminder. Instead of just thinking of it on odd days, you will be reminded you have to work harder to get what you want. If a yearly goal sounds too big, list ten smaller goals you know you can achieve. Build momentum.

  2. Step 2

Think financially. Think financially where you want to be in the future, who you want to work for and how many hours you need to get there. The bottom line is money. Your bills have to be paid, you have to eat and you don’t want to worry every day about not having money for gas. Set up realistic financial goals. Think on them as much as possible. Remember the bottom line.

  3. Step 3

Think mentally. Beyond money, get into a good state in your mind. No one will give you a raise if you seem to have a panic attack every day. A good mental state allows you to make more money because it allows better relationships with workers. It allows you to be happy where you are. There is no point in making career goals if you are mentally unhappy. Put happiness and peace of mind at the top of your list.

  4. Step 4

Decide where you want to be in ten years. Believe that your hard work pays off in the future. Allow yourself to dream. Set a career goal for ten years from now. If you are working a job while attending college, pick the field you would most like to be in. If you are working in fast food, consider saving to get that degree. A career isn’t just about money or happiness, it’s about proving your hard work can pay off.
