Where addiction lies, the addict follows. Alcohol addiction is hard to put down and easy to pick up. Where you may think there is no problem, others might say you have a major problem. Addiction exacts its high price on people because they often doubt they have a problem or need help. When you start hitting the bar around lunch time, lose a job and lose a family, it can be easy to follow the addiction to the very end.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Learn how to have fun without drinking. This is a crucial step. The rates of college students, for example, who use drugs is far higher than any other age groups. It wouldn’t be hard to make the connection about drinking problem arising in college as well. When heavy drinkers stop drinking, they find themselves out of their element and may become bored. They must learn to have fun without drinking. To do this, you must lose the negative friends and maybe even family members. Anyone who supports your alcohol addiction needs to be cut away. This does not mean you have to cut ties to everyone in your life. Nor does it mean you will be bored for years. There are plenty of things you can do instead.
Step2
Support from friends and family. Some of your friends and family will likely be willing to help you fight alcohol addiction. Some of them will even guide you in the struggle. This is crucial. There is an old saying, “An addict alone is in bad company.” The problem is you still have to be social. The answer is to ask for help and stay busy, two things that can help you achieve success in beating the disease.
Step3
AA meetings. Where will you go? What friends can you safely make? Alcoholics Anonymous is one option. It's a program that has changed millions of lives throughout the world. Basically, you go to a meeting, sip on coffee, and share your problems and concerns. Some meetings don’t even require you to say anything; you can just sit and listen. The important thing here is, you are meeting people who do not promote your addiction, just people who help you battle it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Often, addicts use multiple drugs. If you have used drugs like cocaine or marijuana, you can go to Narcotics Anyonymous (NA) meetings.
  • Alcohol addiction is never a safe alternative, especially for the mentally ill. Some medications react badly with illegal drugs and alcohol.
