How to Throw an Eco-Friendly Party

Parties can cause a lot of waste, from electricity to paper and plastic ware. Decorations, invitations, entertainment and food can all add to the garbage left over. Try to be more eco-conscious when planning and holding your next party by following these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Washable dishware
  • Soy-based candles
  • Organic foods

Step1
Go natural. Accustomed to holding your events in the evening? Consider daytime for an easy way to take advantage of the natural light. In case of bad weather, you can always rely on a tent or a sun room if you have one. Natural soy candles can add light to the dimmest of days, with minimal environmental impact. If you have to rely on light bulbs, then try to use compact fluorescent bulbs that are more energy efficient.
Step2
Save a tree. Try emailing your invitations, instead of relying on paper. There are several websites that offer attractive and theme-oriented invitations for your event. These allow your guests to get the earliest notification as well as faster RSVP’s for you.
Step3
Set the table. When looking into centerpieces, create items that can be used again for another event in the future and don’t need to be thrown away, or use fruits and vegetables in creative ways. Bowls of oranges and apples can be festive or consider baskets of fresh herbs for an aromatic centerpiece. Potted plants are a better choice than cut flowers. Use washable and reusable dishes and flatware instead of disposable ones. There are many options of heavy plastic dishware that can set an attractive table.
Step4
Fresh is best. When looking for menu items, lean towards organic options and whole foods, not prepackaged items that can be high in sodium and have excessive amounts of packaging that just ends up in the trash.
Step5
Think before tossing. Make sure that you recycle all the remnants of the party that can be, whether that means packing up leftovers for your aunt to take home or separating paper from glass in the recycling bins as you clean up. Be conscious of your efforts and they can make a real difference.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use any vegetable or fruit waste for your compost bin.
