Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Any receipts for the past year
- Form 1040 or other appropriate forms
Step1
Make sure you have all documents handy. If you don't this is the time to get them. Remember that any deductions you claim must have documented proof, otherwise the IRS just won't trust you enough to take them.
Step2
Will you file by hand or online? Many tax softwares are free, like TurboTax.com if your income qualifies. Remember that if you file by hand, you must write very legibly.
Step3
What was your marital status as of Dec. 31st of last year? Will you file as a single person or jointly? Make sure that if you are the head of the household that you qualify according to the rules set by the IRS to file as such. You should be able to find that on their website.
Step4
Pay attention to all Social Security numbers you include. The IRS computers link the name to the number, and any mistake could result in your tax return not being filed. You do not want the IRS rejecting your credits and deductions.
Step5
Do not use the wrong forms. Consult the IRS website and see if the forms you are using apply to you. Again, a tax filing software may help you with that.
