When faced with abuse at the hands of the one you love, it's a given to feel overwhelmed, alone and trapped but you don't have to become paralyzed with fear. There are options and people who love you who can help you take that first step to the peace and freedom you deserve.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Place to stay
  • Friend or family member for support
  • Courage
  • Determination

Step1
Take your child and leave the house immediately. Take only absolutely necessary items and go to the police to file a report. This way should things escalate there is documentation of the abuse and it buys you time to decide your next step.
Step2
Call a divorce lawyer and arrange an appointment. Maintain absolutely no contact with your spouse during this time.
Step3
Stay at your friend's or family's house until all options are explored (restraining order, legal separation, pressing charges, divorce)and a plan is set in motion. Maintain contact with police should your spouse do or say anything harmful or hurtful to you or your child in any way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Forget your pride or the 'need' for closure. Do not pick up the phone when your spouse calls.
  • Do not meet with your spouse if you suspect a violent outcome.
  • Should you need to meet with your spouse, do so in a public area with friends or family by your side.
  • Do not fall into the "I'm so sorry, I'm so guilty" game. Chances are, that phase will not last long.
