-
Step 1
Men are secretly dying to wear pink! Here's their chance!Invite the guests. Though designed to be held on Valentine's Day, In The Pink can also be held on a weekend before or after. Once you've set the date, invite your most fun and romantic friends, couples and singles. Old school cheapo Valentines from the drug store are kicky invites.
Specify that all guests (including guys) dress in as close to head to toe pink as possible, even if the pinks don't match. Request everyone bring a pink food to share side dish, dessert, salad, etc. If guests have no pink recipes, send them to Epicurious.com or BHG.com. You provide the pink main course.
BTW, this is not as girlie a party as it sounds. I have this notion that men actually love pink. My Dad had a pink shirt and though he blamed my Mom for buying it for him, he really enjoyed wearing it. -
Step 2
Warm up your party room or entry by hanging pink fish from the ceiling.Set the Stage. Whatever your interior color scheme, a few splashes of pink give it that warm and fuzzy Valentine's vibe:
- Replace light bulbs with pink bulbs, available at hardware stores.
- Create a pink fairy light canopy (see below for resource). Secure light strands to the center of the room or lighting fixture (I use 8). Drape diagonally to the corners of the room and tape.
- Hang pink hearts or chinese lanterns from the entry or porch ceiling.
- Buy pink faux fur at the fabric or craft shop, cut and toss over chairs, the sofa. . . it even makes a psychadelic cover for the coffee table.
- The dinner table. . . branches are an inexpensive alternative to flowers. Gather and spray paint the pink of your choice. Lay them over a tablecloth draped with white or pink fairy lights. Arrange food in bowls set among the branches. Try leaning branches against the wall for DIY paneling or arrange them in a vase lit from the bottom.
- Scatter vases with pink lillies, tulips, etc. around.
- Have music loaded into your ipod or ready by the CD player. -
Step 3
Pink Squirrel Anyone?Prepare the Food. Since guests bring appetizers, sides, and snacks, your only worry will be beverages and the main course. My standby and crowd fave is pink peppercorn encrusted prime rib. For variety, also encrust salmon with pink peppercorns. The recipe I use is on epicurious.com. It calls for green and pink peppercorns, but I sub all pink.
Limiting the drink choices to 3-4 relieves party stress. Have pitchers of drinks like martinis and Pink Squirrels pre-mixed so you can spend time mixing with your guests and not drinks! -
Step 4
Party In the Pink. The house is glowing, the drinks are ready and the food is out. Have a tray of cocktails poured and ready to hand off to arriving guests. Imbibe, eat and enjoy. Happy Valentine's Day.
