Managing employees correctly is a key to business success.

Being the boss might sound like a glamorous job until you realize that you actually have to manage employees. Once you realize you are in charge of differing personalities, you may begin to understand why management is not for everyone. However, you can easily keep your sanity and maintain control of your workplace if you just follow simple rules about employee management.

      Learn to be forgiving. Before losing your temper, take a minute to evaluate the situation. Even if it is the employee's fault, you can use this mistake to train the person to be a better employee. Remember that you were someone's employee once, too, so consider how you would have wanted to be treated when you were in that person's shoes.

      Encourage your staff. Employees are used to hearing criticism -- from the boss or an irate customer -- but few employees ever hear an encouraging word when their work is exceptional. If you are pleased with their work, take a second to let them know that you appreciate them. A kind word goes a long way to boosting employee morale.

      Promote teamwork. You may find that each of your employees does their own job well but fails to get along or connect with their coworkers. Your business will run more smoothly if your employees work together for a common goal. You can accomplish this by teaming two or three of them together on a project or planning a company luncheon.

      Know your employees. Human beings are self-centered by nature and love to talk about themselves. You can show your employees you are a compassionate boss by asking about their families and sharing some personal information about yourself. You don't have to be best friends with your employees, but you can at least show them you have a human side as well.

      Listen to your employees. Many employers make the mistake of ignoring employee complaints or concerns. An unhappy employee who doesn't see the boss handling these situations will be a less productive worker. This is also another excellent opportunity to boost employee morale by asking them to create a solution to the problem. Your employees will be more excited about their jobs if they know that they help to create a workable environment.

      Treat everyone fairly. Most people spend the majority of their waking hours at work, so it's only natural that most relationships are formed in the workplace While you can certainly be friends with your employees if appropriate, you cannot show favoritism to these people in the office. If you require a certain level of work flow from one employee, you should assume the same requirement for everyone.
