Computers and computer equipment are fragile items that often contain the important data that runs your life or business. During a move, any unexpected quiver or shake could wind up causing irreparable damage to your computer and thus your data.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Corrugated cardboard boxes
  • Original product boxes and packing materials

Step1
Save the boxes the computer came in along with the packing materials.
Step2
Buy enough moving insurance to cover the costs of replacing or fixing your computer along with the costs of replacing certain valuable data on your computer. For data specifically, I recommend storing backup copies at an online digital storage locker like Yahoo Briefcase. Or you can burn your data onto CDs or DVDs. Or you can load your data onto a portable flash drive.
Step3
Turn off your computer and detach the cables. Make sure that you label each cable for reconnection.
Step4
Use a corrugated cardboard box(es) and place some sort of padding on the bottom of the box(es) if you no longer have the original boxes. Place the computer inside the box. Pad between the sides of the box and the computer’s sides.
Step5
Parking your hard drive, particularly if you have an older computer. Some techies recommend that you remove your hard drives before moving them; then hand-carry the drives to the move.
