Solarizing your garden helps keep weeds and bugs out.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden hose
  • Clear plastic
  • Sod staples or bricks
  • Garden rake
  1. Step 1

This is a great way to get your IPM going for the spring planting. The remaining hard freezes we have left are going to work for you here shortly.

  2. Step 2

Rake off leaves and debris from garden.
Lightly water top 1"or so of entire garden.
Cover garden bed area with clear plastic and hold down with sod staples, bricks, timbers or whatever you have.

  3. Step 3

After a few weeks, you will see new weed growth that is very tender and will die if frozen, heh,heh,heh... Maybe even some bugs in there.

  4. Step 4

When you have enough growth under there, wait until we will be in the 20's again and remove the plastic the afternoon before, so the "unwanteds" will be burned by the freeze.
    Simple huh?

  5. Step 5

Before the last frost or 2, I always turn my garden over to get up anyone who escaped when it was solarized.
    Thats a future article.
