Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- A full-time job
- An existing business or a business idea you want to develop.
Step1
The first thing you need to do to make working a job and developing a business work long-term is to put some thought into why you want to do it. You need goals for your life that will make you stay persistent even when things gets hard.
Take some time on this step. If you make the decision to do this purely on impulse, you'll find staying motivated a lot harder.
Step2
Especially if you're working 40+ hours at your job, start working on the business a few hours a week and work your way up until it begins to feel like the right amount of a challenge for you. It takes awhile, but eventually you'll be able to balance your time.
It also helps with your overall mental and physical energy that you pick a business that you enjoy doing. I've found that most people actually have a better attitude and get more done in both their jobs and businesses if they're having fun during the process.
Step3
It may take several months to several years, but I've known many people whose part-time businesses eventually equaled or surpassed their job income. If you're willing to put in the work and be patient, you really can develop your dream career.

on 3/2/2008 Overall I think the article was a bit lacking *but* the warnings were spot on!

on 2/4/2008 I agree with the warnings. As someone who developed a business while at work, I'd caution about discussing it too much.
There's nothing like a boring or go-nowhere job to get you motivated to start something of your own!
Good article!
