Even with today’s insecure economy, many people are taking the risks to branch out on their own and start their own business. But with so many new businesses on the horizon, entrepreneurs are finding it difficult to stay afloat and often close their company before the end of the first year. If you want to start your own business, you can succeed if you follow these simple tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • A product or service
  • A target market
  • A website

Build Your Own Business

Step1
Choose your product or service. Before hanging your “open” sign, decide what kind of business you are running. Ask yourself what type of service you can best offer your clients.
Step2
Identify your target market. Your product or service is needed by somebody somewhere, so research who might want your business. If you are selling children’s clothes, you probably want to target moms. If you are offering technological assistance, you should consider companies as your potential clients.
Step3
Spread the word. Now that you have chosen your product and your target market, you need to advertise! If you are like many first-time business owners, you probably don’t have a lot of money in your budget. You can easily save advertising dollars by writing press releases for your local newspapers. Get the word out that a new business is in town, and identify what kind of new services or products you can offer for that area.
Step4
Keep your business in the public eye. Potential clients want to know that you have the knowledge and expertise to help them as needed. You can easily show them you are confident in your abilities by writing articles! Ask your local newspaper if you can submit articles on topics related to your field, or consider submitting articles for your website and other websites.
Step5
Enhance your knowledge. In our technologically-savvy world, the rules and standards for businesses change every day. Many business owners fail in their first year because they fail to stay abreast of advances in their market. You can show your clients that you can offer them the best products and services by being up-to-date on advances in your field.

Tips & Warnings

  • One good way to make your business successful is to create a user-friendly website. Sites such as www.godaddy.com offer inexpensive websites with professional appeal.
  • If business seems slow, send out reminders to your former or current clients with a small gift, such as a calendar or pen, with your company's name on it.
  • Don't get discouraged by your first year of sales. Most businesses struggle the first year, but those who persevere are the ones who are the most successful.
