Earning money writing articles for magazines is a lucrative career for many writers. What many veteran writers have learned is that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to take one idea and write several different articles for several different magazines. The result: more articles sold, more money earned.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with internet access
  • The Writer’s Market

How to Write an Article for More Than One Magazine

Step1
Get a copy of this year’s "The Writer’s Market." Or subscribe to the online version of The Writer’s Market. You can subscribe by the month or year. Whether book or online form, this is an essential tool for magazine writers.
Step2
Come up with an idea for an article; let’s say, for instance, dog training in outer space. Look in the Writer’s Market for pet owners’ magazines. You find one, “Contemporary Dog Lovers.” You pitch the original idea to them.
Step3
Look up magazines that deal with space. You find, “Better Homes and Spaceships.” You pitch an idea of the advantages of having dogs living with astronauts on the international space station. Article number two is accepted.
Step4
During your research, you learn about an astronaut who is training a dog to go on the next space mission. You find another magazine, “Lifestyles of the Rich and Weightless.” You pitch a profile on the astronaut and sell this third idea to them.
Step5
You discover that the astronaut is from a small town in Texas. You contact “Texas Byways” and pitch the idea of a small town boy making it as an astronaut and dog trainer. Yet another article sold.
Step6
Continue to look at your article idea from different angles and come up with new ideas. Some of these ideas will come through your research for previous articles. Note: although the suggested article ideas and magazine titles are fictitious, the steps for getting the most out of one article idea are real.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although it is not common, some magazines do not want writers to create different articles from ideas they sold to them. Read your contract carefully before signing.
  • Don’t be lazy and sell the same article to more than one magazine. Part of the contracts for most magazines is that the article you send them is original.
