How to Grow Austrees

Austrees are a willow hybrid species that was bred by scientists. They are tall and grow quickly, making them wonderful trees for windbreaks, privacy screens and controlling erosion. A little preparation before buying and planting the trees and a bit of preventative maintenance will help ensure that your trees flourish.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Buying and Planting Austees

Step1
Select the spot where you would like to plant your trees. When making your decision, consider that Austrees grow as much as 15 feet per year. Because they are willow hybrids, they need a good supply of water and will develop large root systems.
Step2
Visit your local nursery and inquire about Austrees. A local expert will be able to help you decide if Austrees are right for your needs. Buy your Austrees from a local nursery if they are available. Alternatively, you can order them from an online retailer.
Step3
Place your trees about three feet apart for maximum effect as a windbreak or privacy screen. Plant your trees in late spring so they can develop a strong root system before the next winter. Water deeply every few days for about six weeks.

Growing Austrees

Step1
Water your Austree regularly if you live in an area that does not get much rain. Use a drip system for the most efficient watering. It’s best to water deeply once a week than provide a little water several times a week.
Step2
Fertilize using a balanced formula made for trees. This will help keep the tree healthy, especially if you live in an area with poor soil.
Step3
Spray your tree twice a year with a mild insecticide to prevent infestations. Many garden centers now sell organic insecticides that are safe for your children and pets.

Tips & Warnings

  • Austrees can damage buildings, driveways and septic tanks if planted too close to these structures. An Austree’s roots will generally grow to be about one-third the size of the tree, according to the Rocky Mountain Austree Inc. (see Resources below).
  • Austrees can be messy. They are deciduous, so they lose their leaves in the fall. In addition, their small branches can snap during heavy winds or snowfall.
  • Like many fast-growing species, Austrees have a short life span. Don’t plant them if you want trees that will survive 50 years or more.
