How to Write How-to Articles

The thousands of articles on this site provide answers to questions relating to almost any topic. If you're accepted as a writer and receive an assignment, you can generate content for this site. Here's how to turn your how-to ideas into articles.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Choose a topic. Brainstorm until you find one that is distinctive, and that you’re qualified to write about.
Step2
Check to make sure someone hasn’t already written on the same or a very similar topic. If an article on the subject already exists, only write on that topic if you can provide a singular spin on it.
Step3
Once you have your title, begin writing your article by listing any needed materials or prerequisites. Also, rate the difficulty of the process you’re describing: Easy, Moderately Easy, Moderate, Moderately Challenging, or Challenging.
Step4
Think about your process, and break it down into steps. Ideally, you should be describing a process that can be broken down into five to seven steps (or more). Explain the steps in a logical, orderly fashion. Use active sentences at all times and refrain from being wordy. Don't hyperbolize and refrain from using empty adjectives or the overused "unique."
Step5
Add any necessary tips or warnings to the end of your step-by-step instructions.
Step6
When you have written all the steps and tips, go back to the beginning and write a brief introductory paragraph. Explain the purpose of the article, and provide any necessary background information.
Step7
Look back over your article, keeping an eye out for spelling or grammar mistakes or errors in your instructions. When you’re satisfied that the article is as good as it can be, submit it to eHow for publication.

Tips & Warnings

  • Type and proofread the article on your word processor. Only after you’re satisfied that it is ready to publish should you copy and paste it into the separate fields on the “Publish an Article” page. Attempting to type your article on this page will only lead to mistakes, timed-out Internet connections and excessive frustration.
