How to Handle a Pushy Boss

In most any workplace, there is the notorious "pushy boss." They like things done their way, have tight deadlines, and always seem to be looking over your shoulder. Cubicles aside, a pushy boss is never far away and rarely gives you the privacy you need to complete your work. This person can be downright impossible! If quitting your job isn't an option, there are a few things you can do to ease your stressful situation at the office.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A pushy boss
  • Patience
  • Organization
  • Ability to speak up

Step1
Give your pushy boss the benefit of the doubt. Yes, they may be a control freak and overly involved in everyone's business, but this doesn't make them a BAD person. Learn to separate pushy from unfriendly. Their controlling attitude may just be their way of getting things done more effectively.
Step2
Set some boundaries. Even for your boss. If they make a habit of popping into your cubicle six times a day for updates or advice, gently let them know when the best time to meet is. Say something like, "I appreciate your advice, but can we schedule a short meeting each day around one so I can get my tasks finished on time?" They may not be aware they're intruding on your time.
Step3
Take a breather. If your control freak boss complains over every memo you draft and every report you come up with, go outside for a few minutes and let off some steam. Sometimes you need a little pick-me-up beyond the office walls to reclaim your sanity.
Step4
Ask them how to do it better. Yes, it may be like nails on a chalkboard. You may feel like a goody goody. But, by asking your pushy boss for their opinion and critique of your work, you'll be showing them you value their opinion. Hey, they may even move onto a new target if they get an ego boost from you.
Step5
Remain calm when speaking with a controlling or hyperactive boss. Chances are, they behave the way they do for a reason. They probably act the same way at home if that gives you any relief. Listen, breathe, and say positive things like, "I understand what you mean...but do you think I can put my own spin on...?"
Step6
Divert attention away from your work. If all else fails and your boss doesn't seem to lighten up, try to get them to focus on something else. Ask about the Cowboys game over the weekend, discuss the new wine you tried last night, or talk about your children. Sometimes a pushy person just needs a distraction to divert their energy elsewhere.
Step7
Come up with a new way of getting tasks done. Pushy people tend to like innovation and frequently move from one thing to another. Let them see it in a new light. Wow them with your creativity and determination.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you simply cannot get along with a boss, consider a transfer to another department if possible.
  • Never gossip with coworkers about the pushy boss everyone claims to hate. Chances are, someone truly likes them and is reporting everything you say back to them.
